Locations

The Gastroenterology service at each hospital provides consultative care to hospital inpatients and offers consultative appointments and endoscopic procedures to outpatients. UCSF is home to the Center for Colitis and Crohn’s Disease, Familial/Hereditary Gastrointestinal Cancer Prevention (cancer genetics/inherited disorders clinic), the Liver Transplant Program, Advanced Endoscopy and Endoscopic Ultrasound, Center for Gastrointestinal Motility and Secretion, and the Intestinal Failure Program.

At the Parnassus campus, gastroenterology and hepatology services are separated and the Liver Transplant program operates its own inpatient service. At Zuckerberg San Francisco General and the San Francisco VA Medical Center, the gastroenterology and hepatology services are united.

Zuckerberg San Francisco General (ZSFG) is the focal point of the city's safety-net healthcare system and a Level 1 trauma center. This site is a center of excellence in health care for HIV-infected patients and a leader in the delivery of Gastroenterology and Hepatology specialty care to ethnically diverse, underserved patient populations. GI physicians at ZSFG have received recognition for training mid-level professionals to perform endoscopy; the division has also successfully implemented immunohistochemical fecal occult blood testing (FIT) within the safety-net system as an economical approach to colon cancer screening. In addition, innovative approaches to management of chronic liver disease that are tailored to the underserved populations has been established. ZSFG is the administrative home of the UCSF Liver Center, a multidisciplinary research consortium focusing on liver biology and disease.
