Mission Statement
To cultivate exceptional academic gastroenterologists and hepatologists who will excel as clinicians, educators, and researchers in the field of gastroenterology.
Clinical Excellence
Our objective is to ensure that fellows achieve exceptional proficiency in both the procedural and cognitive aspects of gastroenterology. Our comprehensive endoscopy curriculum includes extensive hands-on experience, with fellows gaining exposure to a high volume of procedures throughout their training, significantly surpassing the minimum requirements for endoscopy. Our program stands out for its rigorous approach to procedure volume and endoscopic complexity.
Our unique three-hospital system—comprising UCSF Medical Center, Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital, and the San Francisco VA Medical Center—offers a wide array of pathologies in patients from diverse backgrounds. Additionally, we provide specialized training opportunities in Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), motility, hepatology, hepatobiliary, and advanced endoscopy.
Research Excellence
We are committed to supporting trainees with a passion for research, whether clinical, translational or basic science. Our program is bolstered by T32 training grants, ensuring ample protected time for research endeavors. Our faculty includes numerous distinguished and well-funded research mentors with proven success in guiding fellows to independent academic success. We provide essential resources to enhance trainees' research skills, including funding for a master's degree in clinical research.
By fostering an environment of clinical and research excellence, the UCSF Gastroenterology fellowship program aims to produce leaders who will advance the field of gastroenterology through innovative clinical practices and groundbreaking research.
